Tour Highlights

UNESCO World Heritage Sites & Historical Treasures

Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah: Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah is an ancient fortified village and is considered the “pinnacle” of Moroccan earthen architecture in the south. Built in the 11th century, it has been a filming location for over 20 Hollywood movies, including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Mummy, to name a few. With its unique towers, crenellated walls, and winding alleyways, it feels like you are being transported back to the medieval era. Guided tours highlight the architectural ingenuity of the structures made completely from rammed earth, straw, and wood and how these structures can keep comfortable year-round without the use of modern technologies.

Telouet Kasbah: this Kasbah is once a magnificent residence of T’hami El Glaoui, the last Pasha of Marrakech, provides an eerie look into the colonial history of Morocco. While the political downfall of the family in 1956 resulted in devastation for part of the palace, sections of the palace are still incredibly well-preserved, with some of the most beautiful painted ceilings, tilework, and carved plaster of the time that were an indication of opulence among the upper class of Morocco before independence from colonial rule.

Cinematic Landscapes & Film Locations

Ouarzazate, “Hollywood of Africa”: It is a desert city that has been a location for many international films. Visit the Atlas Film Studios where they have permanent sets for films such as Kingdom of Heaven, The Mummy and Asterix and Obelix – The Tour. While on tour through the studio, you will see how the dramatic landscape of Morocco is transformed into a representation of many different locations, including Ancient Rome, Jerusalem, Egypt and other worlds from the movie universe! All of the props, costumes and other materials come together to create the magic of cinema!

Film-Worthy Landscapes: Beyond the studios, you will see many of the same dramatic landscapes that drew directors like Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese and David Lean to Morocco. The stunning expanse of desert, the dramatic vertical rise of mountain ranges and the ancient quality of the Kasbahs can all be made into a film set with very little modification.

Natural Wonders & Geological Marvels

Todra Gorges: With towering limestone cliffs rising 300 meters and narrowing as little as 10 meters, Todra Gorges is a stunning example of nature’s beauty in Morocco. Millions of years of erosion by the Todra River created the steep walls that make Todra Popular among rock climbers from across the globe. The cool microclimate makes the gorge a welcome break from the heat of the surrounding desert, and the acoustics create a reverberating, almost cathedral-like quality within the gorge. Walking through the base of the gorge will follow the water’s path and reveal enormous boulders that have been shaped by the river’s slow, steady force.

Dades Valley & “Monkey Fingers”: One is its rock formations locally referred to as “Monkey Fingers” for their unusual shape, spires that twist up toward the sky. Geological processes have created the unique shapes of the “Monkey Fingers”, uplift, erosion, and weathering. The Dades River has carved a path through the valley floor, resulting in a green ribbon of cultivated fields and palm groves that contrast significantly with the nearby dry cliffs.

Tizi n’Tichka Pass: This dramatic route crosses one of Africa’s highest peaks, the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at an elevation of 2260 meters, making it one of North Africa’s most scenic drives, this road winds its way through a series of hairpin turns and steep drop-offs with breathtaking views of valleys filled with traditional Berber settlements that cling to the sides of the Ait Ayach Mountains. This pass also serves as a transition area between northern Morocco, with its Mediterranean climate, and southern Morocco, which is located in the heart of the Sahara Desert.

Draa Valley Palm Grove: The Draa River creates an almost unbroken green corridor through the desert, as it runs over 150 km from the Draa River to the Atlantic Ocean. This river, along with thousands of date palms that provided shade and sustenance along the ancient caravan routes, supported people travelling across the desert. You will have an opportunity to view this agricultural paradise located in the Draa River Valley from many different viewpoints. The Draa River and khettara, or subterranean irrigation systems, are used to cultivate crops without losing water due to evaporation caused by extreme heat in the desert.

Sahara Desert Adventure & Activities

Camel Trekking Across Erg Chebbi Dunes: Experience desert travel as it has been for thousands of years with an intimate Camel Trek. Depart during the twilight hours and venture into the vastness of the Erg Chebbi Dunes on a camel. The experience will be enhanced by the enchanting light of a sunset as you make your way deeper into the dunes. You will be able to take a moment to reflect on the beauty of nature and the meditative cadence of riding camels. Your guide will choose the best scenic routes to traverse and will stop at certain dunes for photography when the light has transformed into its most fantastic hue. If desired, you can take a return trek early morning (optional) to experience the dunes’ otherworldly beauty and different perspectives, including cooler temperatures, gentler light, and textures that were obscured previously.

Luxury Desert Camp Experience: Staying in a Luxury Desert Camp takes camping beyond traditional expectations. These types of accommodations include Berber-style tents equipped with beds, bedding, electric lights, and toilet facilities that feature flushing toilets and hot showers powered by either solar panels or gas. Communal areas typically have traditional Berber-style lounges, with rugs and floor cushions, dining tent areas serving multi-course Moroccan-style meals, and outdoor areas for relaxing under the stars. Electricity is available through either solar power or generator power to charge your devices. However, we encourage you to take a break from using your devices to truly immerse yourself in the desert.

Sandboarding Adventures: Boards are supplied for free to allow sliding down the high slopes of dunes. You can slide down dunes seated, kneeling, or standing, creating thrilling experiences and allowing for great photo opportunities. Soft sand provides a good landing surface for new/different boarders. Individuals with experience will find steep slopes suited to them. A guide will assist you with the best locations/techniques for each skill level.

Cultural Immersion & Authentic Experiences

Khamliya’s Gnawa Musical Traditions: Descendants of former sub-Saharan African slaves and slave traders convey their heritage through the musical form known as Gnawa Music. It has rich spiritual roots composed of the Guembri (a three-stringed bass lute) and Qraqeb (metal castanets), along with rhythmic patterns that are hypnotic in nature and create a trance-like effect. The Gnawa Music performance you will witness will not be tailored or adjusted to meet a tourist’s expectations. It is presented in an authentic manner originating from a long-standing tradition for many generations and has been recognised by UNESCO as part of their Cultural Heritage.

Traditional Rissani Souk: The former capital of the Alaouite Dynasty of Morocco, the Rissani market is one of the most unique and genuine souks in the country. On certain days during market season (Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday), a vibrant and busy atmosphere can be appreciated with the sounds of livestock trading, merchants selling spices and textiles, potters selling ceramic products, and many produce stalls. The local atmosphere provides visitors with an insight into the real rural economy of Morocco rather than the tourist market. Visitors will observe traditional haggling techniques used by local people, how locals do their shopping, and purchase goods at the truly local price. The architecture of the souk has not changed significantly over hundreds of years, with covered walkways allowing shafts of light to shine onto the earthen walls and wooden beams of the souk.

Visiting Local Berber Villages: As part of your trip, you’ll visit several Berber Villages and have opportunities to meet a local nomadic family and drink tea with them (while your guide will assist you in arranging such visits). These unscheduled “meet and greets” allow you to see traditional architectural styles as well as hospitality practices, but also offer a glimpse into the many difficulties associated with living in rural areas. Many families will open their homes to visitors, providing a glass of mint tea (the symbol of Moroccan hospitality), bread baked over wood fires and conversation about various topics (i.e., farming, education and marriage traditions).

Fossil Workshops in Erfoud: This area of the world was once covered by an ocean some 300 to 400 million years ago. As a result, this area has an abundance of fossil deposits, including trilobites, ammonites, orthoceras and many other marine creatures that were preserved in limestone or marble. You will also have the opportunity to visit workshops where these fossils are excavated from their respective quarries, cut with diamond saws and polished to create beautiful decorative items. While many tourist shops sell inexpensive replicas of fossils, the workshops you visit will have authentic paleontological specimens and will provide you with details about their geological history and significance. Additionally, you will witness craftsmen converting rough stones into plates, basins, tables, and ornaments that you will have the chance to purchase; each of these items has thousands of years’ worth of history behind it.

Complete Itinerary: Marrakech to Merzouga 4 Days Tour

Driving Time: Approximately 6-7 hours
Distance: 315-350 km
Overnight: Traditional Riad in Dades Valley

The Marrakech to Merzouga 4 days tour departs in the morning, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the morning light as you travel down the road into the mountains of the High Atlas. Once you leave Marrakech, you will begin travelling up into the High Atlas Mountains; this is Africa’s tallest mountain range and the natural barrier that has defined the history of Morocco for thousands of years.

The Tizi n’Tichka Pass is one of the most beautiful roads in North Africa, rising to an altitude of 2260 m. This is a winding road, and from every turning, the views will take your breath away as you pass through the tunnel area. Traditional Berber villages have built their homes into the mountainside, and their home styles are made from natural stones that blend with the rock formations. You can take pictures at several points along the way and see the incredible views from the mountains while observing the traditional rural lifestyle that has changed very little over the last few hundred years.

After climbing up to the summit of the Atlas Mountains, you will arrive at one of your biggest destinations, Ait Ben Haddou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the finest example of southern Morocco’s earthen architecture and consists of a fortified village (ksar) constructed using rammed earth, straw and timber exclusively. The uniquely designed towers and crenellated walls of the kasbah made it a sought-after location for many Hollywood films. The guided tour will show you the brilliance of the construction using only passive heating and passive cooling systems to keep the interior temperature at a comfortable level throughout the year. From the top of the Kasbah, you’ll have incredible panoramic views of the valleys below that were once used by caravans travelling across the Sahara on trade routes.

Your journey continues after lunch with more breathtaking views of Mother Nature’s dramatic landscape. First, you will travel through the Skoura Oasis, where thousands of palm trees grow and create a lush green environment surrounded by desert. Following the Skoura Oasis, you will head towards the Valley of Roses, which is next to Kelaat M’Gouna. From April to May, during the harvest when all of the roses have bloomed, this valley is filled with a sweet aroma of rose petals in bloom as the locals harvest the Damascus roses to produce perfumes and cosmetic products.

The Dades Valley offers something unique upon arriving, as the afternoon turns into evening. Famous for dramatic gorges and bizarre rock formations nicknamed “monkey fingers” for their resemblance to primate digits. Your accommodation, a traditional riad or a comfortable hotel with views of the famous Dades Valley gorges and its unusual rock formations, is also included in this experience. Dinner will feature typical Moroccan dishes like lamb tagine with prunes and almonds or traditional vegetable couscous cooked the old-fashioned way. You will experience an atmosphere of tranquillity away from the noise and bright lights of cities, and will be able to experience a small part of Morocco’s hidden beauty.

Driving Time: Approximately 4-5 hours
Distance: 280 km
Overnight: Luxury Desert Camp

Travel along the road to see the Dades Gorges and their famous rock formations up close as you enjoy breakfast with a panoramic view of the valley below. The road to the Dades Gorges has numerous switchbacks that provide stunning views of the entire valley network, making it a very scenic drive.

Upon reaching the magnificent Todra Gorges, take a hike along the canyon that follows the riverbed. The paved walkway goes about 600 meters into the narrowest part of the canyon, with the limestone walls soaring over you by 300 meters while being separated by only 10 meters at the narrowest point (the gorge). This part of the canyon is absolutely breathtaking and has a “cathedral-like” quality due to its vertical walls and temperature drop. You may even spot some rock climbers on the cliffs and see how the morning sun reflects off the brilliant orange-pink color of the limestone. Plan on spending 45-60 minutes taking in the views of this natural wonder.

As you continue traveling east, the landscape transforms into more of a desert landscape. Enjoy a lunch break in the small towns of Touroug or Tinjdad (not included; €8-12), where you’ll find authentic Moroccan food that is popular with residents and visitors alike.

Additionally, you may want to make an optional stop at the fossil workshop in Erfoud to observe how skilled artisans cut and polish blocks of black marble that contain some of the oldest fossils on Earth; this marble originated from an ancient seabed located in the Sahara Desert approximately 300 million years ago. The artisans use traditional methods that have been passed down through the generations to produce superior quality fossil pieces that are suitable for display. Although there is no obligation to buy, these pieces are unique souvenirs of your experience.

When arriving at Merzouga, you will immediately notice a dramatic change in the surrounding environment. The flat desert floor will give way to massive dunes that rise majestically into the sky; these dunes are part of the Erg Chebbi dune formation, which is 22 kilometres long and can reach a height of 150 metres. The contrast created by the black hammada (rocky desert) and golden dunes is breathtaking.

After meeting the camel caravan, you will begin your journey into the dunes on your own camel that will be managed by an experienced camel handler. Your camel ride journey will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes and will be timed to ensure that you arrive at your campsite just before sunset. As you travel on your camel, the landscape will continuously change perspective as you ride between towering dunes, across level sandy expanses, and up gentle slopes.

Before heading to the communal dining tent, de-stress and unwind from your private tent’s ensuite bathroom. A delicious meal of Moroccan salad, followed by tajine or couscous, followed by fresh fruit for dessert, served with mint tea while sharing personal stories, will take place.

After dining, enjoy traditional Berber drumming by the warm fireside. The soothing beat of the drum reverberates throughout the sand dunes creating a mystical and ageless experience. People are encouraged to join in on the drumming, since enthusiasm beats experience!

Take a short walk away from the camp toward the stars and enjoy the Cruzan Sky, which has no pollution from artificial light and thus provides detailed views of the cosmos. If you look really closely on moonless nights, you’ll be able to actually see your own shadow by the Gala’s light.

Overnight: Riad or Kasbah in Merzouga
Activities: Flexible based on personal interests

Early in the morning, a camel caravan is prepared to transport you to the highest dunes for viewing the sunrise, or you may choose to hike independently for 15-20 minutes. An early start is rewarding as you can see the dunes transition through various colours of dusk: indigo, pink, and gold as the sun rises over them. The air temperature can be quite cool (at least from October until March,h), so dress warmly.

You should wear several layers of clothing. After watching the sunrise, you will return to your camels and ride back to camp for breakfast, which includes Moroccan bread with butter, jam, chees, and eggs (the jam is usually homemade), crêpes (similar to pancakes), orange juice, and coffee/tea.

After breakfast, you will pack the rest of your belongings for the return trip via camel to Merzouga, where you will have a vehicle to meet you. This third day is particularly significant because you will have ample time to really enjoy the desert beyond the normal experience of a camel trek.

Explore Erg Chebbi’s dunes on a 4×4 adventure. Meet the nomadic people who live in the area, taking care of their goats and camels according to the same customs as for many generations, and share a cup of mint tea with them while learning about desert survival, eating desert plants for medicine, and finding a way to keep their nomadic ways going in today’s time period. At the seasonal lake, we will also observe the flamingos and migratory birds from January to April, as permitted by water availability. Many abandoned kohl mines can be reached, as well as the spectacular “Paris-Dakar Rally” viewing point, giving a 360-degree panorama of dunes.

Experience a live performance of authentic Gnawa music in Khamliya village. The performance lasts 30 to 45 minutes and will introduce you to this extraordinary style of music with its spiritual meanings and hypnotic rhythms. A lot of people find the experience very touching as the music puts them in a trance-like state. After the show, enjoy mint tea with the musicians and purchase any of their CDs to help support the community if you wish.

For lunch, you can enjoy either a meal from your accommodation or at a local restaurant (not included, with a price of between €8-12). You will be able to try traditional Moroccan food at most restaurants, while others will offer pizza for those who want something more comfortable.

You may have the opportunity to visit Rissani, Market days on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Should the timing be appropriate, travelers have the opportunity to visit an authentic Moroccan Souk where one can observe many different types of commerce, including donkey traders, spice vendors, blacksmiths, and date merchants who have conducted business using the same methods for generations.

Upon checking into the riad, you may want to take an evening stroll to the dunes for the sunset, without the need to go by camel. This ‘golden hour’ yields the best time for photography, showcasing all the great features of the sunset.  Your evening meal at the riad will include another Moroccan dish, such as chicken with olives and preserved lemons; lamb with prunes and almonds; or some other type of meal. Finally, we suggest spending the last night enjoying the stars from the rooftop terrace, with the stunning view of the dunes.

Driving Time: Approximately 9 hours
Distance: 560 km

An extensive travel day is anticipated in order to arrive at Marrakech in a timely and comfortable manner. An 8:00 AM departure is planned to allow for adequate time for travel to be completed.

After crossing Rissani, travelers will ride through many remote areas of the Moroccan desert while traveling via Alnif and Tazzarine to enter the spectacular Draa Valley – the largest river valley in Morocco. This Marrakech desert trip 4 days focuses on the incredible contrasts between the seemingly endless palm tree farmed lands that create a vibrant green area in the midst of the desert. It is estimated that approximately one million date palms are growing within this region and that they provide the basis for dozens of ancient Kasbahs and rural traditional villages that have been built using the earth and blend seamlessly into the reddish tone of the earth.

After departing Draa Valley, the next stop will be for a lunch break (not included in the package €8 – €12) in one of the many traditional towns within the Draa Valley. Nkob is a town with 45 stunning Kasbahs, some of the best examples of fortified adobe architecture in the country, with four to five stories tall and decorated with ornate towers and geometric plaster designs.

Journey through the Draa Valley and then climb back up into the High Atlas Mountains. This route will show you a new view of the scenery you saw on Day 1, with the afternoon light providing a different look to the mountains because of their changing colours.

The last time you cross the High Atlas Mountains is at the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass. While you are crossing, the long shadows cast by the afternoon sun create an interesting interplay on the valleys below. You may also see shepherds bringing their flocks of sheep home to the sheep pen for the night.

At the end of your 4 days Sahara desert tour Morocco, you will be dropped off at your place of accommodation in Marrakech with many memories from the past 4 days and possibly even some Sahara sand still in your shoes.

Essential Knowledge: Cultural & Logistical Preparation & Packing

Essential Prep. & Packing

Clothes: With Morocco’s varied landscapes, the weather also varies greatly. It can be very hot (30-40 °C) during the day in the desert, but it is usually much cooler in the desert during the night, especially in winter when it could dip to around freezing. You should pack for a variety of temperatures by including:

Shirts with long sleeves. These will keep your skin protected from the sun while also being culturally appropriate.

Trousers/jeans. Wear long pants or jeans on camel rides to prevent the chafing that may result from wearing shorts.

A fleece or thicker/warmer jacket for cooler desert nights.
Sturdy, closed-toe footwear. Wear something comfortable and suitable for walking.

Camel Trekking Pack: A pack to bring on your camel trek may contain the following items: Water, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a torchlight/headlamp to see your way around your tent at night. There will not be any towels at the desert camp, so bring your own.

Your Luggage: While you’re at the desert camp, your main suitcase will remain locked in your transport vehicle (which may be a minibus or 4×4). Therefore, you should prepare a smaller overnight bag with all the necessary items for your stay at the desert camp.

Financial Aspects and Traditions

Cash Only: Moroccans will require cash for all transactions in rural areas, small towns, or outposts in the Sahara where they do not have the ability to use a credit/debit card. While there are ATMs in major cities such as Marrakech and Ouarzazate, they quickly become few and far between when travelling further out into the countryside. It is wise to keep small change available when you want to give someone a tip or make a small purchase.

Respect for Moroccan Culture: As Morocco is predominantly a Muslim country, many people in rural areas still practice more traditional aspects of the religion. Visitors should dress modestly (covering their knees and shoulders) and also ask permission before taking pictures of people, in addition to respecting prayer times. Showing even these small gestures of respect will go a long way and be appreciated by the locals.

Internet Connectivity: In urban areas and hotels/riads, Wi-Fi should be easily found; however, as you get further and further away from major cities (especially in and around the Sahara), it is common to have very limited or no internet connectivity.

Making Custom Changes To Your Tour

A Marrakech desert trip 4 days, can be tailored to your specific interests, physical ability, and speed requirements. If you are not physically able to take a camel ride due to mobility issues, we will arrange for a comfortable 4X4 vehicle transfer to and from your desert camp without charging you any extra fees; you will still get a chance to enjoy a magical stay in a desert camp without having to do the camel trekking part.

Extra activities

We can add additional activities, such as Quad biking in the dunes, sandboarding down steep dunes, Buggy tour, or just spending more time at any particular site or place that fascinates you. When you book your itinerary, let us know what your requirements are, and we will create an itinerary tailored specifically for you.

Absolutely! Moroccan food is rich in wonderful vegetarian dishes such as vegetable tagines, couscous with vegetables, fresh salads, and legume dishes. You need to tell us beforehand about any special dietary needs or allergies, and all meals served at both the guesthouse and the desert camp will be made to meet those specific needs without losing the taste or authenticity of the dishes.

The distance between Marrakech and Merzouga is about 550 (340) to 560 (350) kilometers. The trip to Merzouga is not a simple road trip on a single, unbroken road; there are mountain ranges, Hessian hillsides, and valley systems in between. In fact, while most people think of a straightforward trip from Marrakech to the wonderful Moroccan Sahara Desert at Merzouga, our Marrakech desert trip 4 days divides this journey up into two days and provides for two overnight accommodations (s) on each trip in Merzouga, thereby allowing travelers to experience the sites along the entire journey, rather than just driving through them.

This tour is usually offered year-round and the different seasons afford different aspects to enjoy. Spring (March, April, and May) is when the weather is generally nice and mild; Autumn (September, October, and November) has similar temperatures and experience to spring but with less winds. Summer (June, July, August) is the warmest period of the year with the benefit of fewer tourists and bright, sunny days. In Winter (December, January, February), the weather is pleasant during the day but cold at night, which allows for fire pit gatherings; on occasion, snow can cover parts of the High Atlas. Your local driver/guide will modify your overall experience based on the seasonal conditions.

This tour has many options for family visits. The most common element cited as magical was the camel ride or Desert Camping experience. Parents will find the 4 days desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga an ideal choice for their families because the slower pace of the tour reduces stress associated with extended driving time. Children older than 6 usually enjoy participating in all aspects of the tour, while children 4-5 need adequate access to in-car entertainment for extended periods of driving time.

There is a “skip the camel ride” option. This alternative is recommended for families with very young children or families worried about riding camels safely. The private tour option also allows families maximum flexibility to accommodate their personal requirements (e.g., scheduling of break times, meal time adjustments, and scheduling of activities according to children’s energy levels).

Yes, quad bikes are available for hire in Merzouga, offering an exciting way to explore the desert landscape.

Yes! Sandboards are usually available at the desert camp for guests to use at their leisure free of charge. Sandboarding down the steep dunes provides an exhilarating experience and fantastic photo opportunities. Your camp hosts or guide can show you the best dunes for sandboarding and provide basic instruction if you’ve never tried it before. It’s suitable for most ages and fitness levels, though caution is advised on the steepest slopes
