Itinerary of 2 day desert tour from Marrakech
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ouarzazate – Merzouga (Camping)
Distance: 565 km/During the trip, approximately 9 hours.
The Marrakech to Merzouga Tour takes place over two Days. You will be picked up at your accommodation in Marrakech early in the day (recommended pickup time at around 7:00 am), before heading out of the busy Medina towards the High Atlas Mountains.
The road begins to wind dramatically as you ascend the Tizi N’Tichka Mountain Pass; while travelling along this route, you‘ll see some amazing views of the Typical Berber Villages located on the sides of the mountains, together with terraced areas which have been carved out of the mountainsides. You will have a number of stops for photography and for the chance to experience some of the local life in the rural areas of Morocco.
After a stop for traditional Moroccan tea and snacks, you will continue to Ouarzazate, also known as the “Gateway to the Sahara“. As you descend from the mountains, you will see the Green Oasis of the Skoura palm oasis, which springs forth from the desert. As you continue your journey through the valley of Roses, where the locals harvest roses for perfume and cosmetics, the environment transforms from the lushness of the valley to the stark beauty of the desert.
As the afternoon wears on and the anticipation builds, your first glimpse of Erg Chebbi will make your heart race. The towering dunes of Erg Chebbi look like waves of gold suspended in time.
Your camel will be your mode of transportation for an approximately 1 to 1.5-hour trek into the dazzling dunes as the sun sets, painting the sand amber, copper, and gold. You will experience total silence, only interrupted by the sound of the camel’s feet softly padding on the sand.
Once the sun has gone down, you will arrive at your private luxury camp for a wonderful dinner. Following dinner, there will be an entertaining evening of traditional Berber drumming around a bonfire and the beautiful Milky Way shining above you. This is truly the way to experience the Sahara intimately, magically, and permanently etched in your memory.
Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Marrakech
Traveling Distance/Time: 562 km/ 8-9 hours of Driving Time
Those who rise early enough to see the sunrise will be pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the Sahara Desert. The early morning is a great time to photograph the beauty of the desert and to collect your thoughts before you head home.
The desert changes with the first light of day; the sand and shadows in the photograph differ from the same area later in the day. After breakfast at the campsite, you will make your way back from the desert either by camel or 4×4.
The route back will differ from the way to the campsite (Your return trip back will take the Southern route to Alnif). Rather than retracing yesterday’s route, you will take a completely different route, allowing you to see different landscapes that are also surrounded by the Anti-Atlas Mountains.
The route through the Drâa Valley is another highlight of your trip. It was once a part of the historic caravan route from Morocco to Timbuktu. The palm groves and kasbahs in the valley give you a glimpse of the trading history of the region when camel caravans transported gold, salt, and spices through this area.
Aït Benhaddou is arguably Morocco’s most famous kasbah, and it is the highlight of Day 2. Aït Benhaddou is a magnificent example of earthen clay architecture that towers above the desert landscape with its impressive fortifications. The site has been a prominent part of many exceptional movies, including “Gladiator” and “Game of Thrones,” since 1987, when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site has numerous narrow alleys and many stunning views from its high vantage point.
After spending four additional hours driving, you’ll arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon. You’ll be taken back to your accommodations, where you’ll have captured numerous photographs and had quite a bit of fun in the sand.

Camel Treks- How Long is The ride?
Taking into account both directions, it will take approximately 1–1.5 hours for the camel trek from the car to the camp, then back again. So, if you plan to take pictures of the breathtaking sun rising or setting behind the dunes, this will give you plenty of time.
Can I skip the camel ride to my camp?
Of Course! If you are unable or unwilling to ride a camel due to any physical limitations, comfort concerns, or personal preferences, we will provide you with a direct transfer via 4×4 Vehicle to the camp at no additional cost. Your trip will still be complete without the Camel Riding Experience.
Does the desert camp have its own private bathroom?
Yes. We only use Luxury Desert Camps that guarantee you will have your own tent with en-suite bathroom facilities, including a full–flush toilet as well as hot showers. You will never have to share facilities with anybody and compromise your hygiene.

This tour is suitable for families with children of any age, but please keep in mind that there are many hours of travel during this tour, which may not be appropriate for very young children or those who have difficulty walking. When is the best time to take the tour?
To secure your booking, a deposit (usually 20%) is required. This may be made through PayPal, credit card, or by bank transfer.
